Shaggy, the Chow Chow mix!

Everyone who sees Shaggy stops and stares!  You can’t help it because he looks so unique.  The Chow Chow is undeniable in him but the coloring is not the norm for Chow’s.  Shaggy only weighs about 32 pounds, is approx. 1 year old and is very easy going.  He has a great personality and is sharing his cell with 2 other dogs without squabbles.  He loves to be comfortable on his Kuranda bed, especially if he has a blanky, and he loves the ladies! He is in need of a good grooming and I would love to see how awesome he would look afterward.  If you like the shaggy dogs, please don’t bypass our Shaggy boy.

When I got curious about Merlin's "spitz" comment, I went to Wikipedia to check it out, and there are a number of dogs you could easily confuse with a chow mix, among them some breeds with this marking.

I cannot speak for the chow, but the original Sharpei from Hong Kong, once  in North America at one time was crossed with Weimeraner ( hence the blue sharpei), and I believe there was Boxer also put into the genes a long time ago.

The flowered occurrence has also been noted in China,  not only in North America.

The chow is this picture is to me definitely a mixed chow... but a flowered sharpei is not necessarily a mixed sharpei.

I don't have enough knowledge to explain the various genotypes to you, but I'm sure I could point you in the direction of several sharpei breeders who could offer you more detailed information.
