My chow has allergies
Oct 3rd, 2008 at 8:10pm

My 6 month old chow chow has allergies. I have changed her food but her eyes are still weepy. I have had the vet check them to make sure that it is not ingrown eyelashes. I ran into someone in my city of SB who also had a chow and he recommend an allergy med that i could find at my local store......clora...something. I can't remember what he said. any body else have any ideas?
thanx

Hi Zsa Zsa,

I think that a lot of chow puppies go through various types of allergies whilst they're young.  I have 2 young females - Mika is 8 months old and Suki is 4 and a half months old.  Suki suffers with an itchy tummy and legs, and the vet gave me an allergy spray which has worked a treat.

Mika has the same problem as your chow, in that she has one weepy eye (which is not entropian).  She started with it when she was around 6 months old and it was always quite gungy on a morning.  I just clean her eyes with Johnsons eye and ear wipes every morning and in the afternoon if she needs it again, and I have to say that she is slowly growing out of it.  I still clean both puppies eyes every morning, but Mika no longer has the yellow gungy stuff on hers.

You can also try boiling some water in a tumbler with a teaspoon of salt in it, and then when it cools, dip the cotton wool in there and gently wipe her eyes.  You will probably find that it will get better by itself within a couple of months or so.

Hi Zsa Zsa--,

I see that you are new at our B(lue)T(ongue)T(alk) forum.
Please, for the good order and for having some reference for the forum members, make an introducting about yourself and your Chow on the board:

NetChows :: Chow-Chow :: Blue Tongue Talk » :: Forum Stuff :: » Chow!

Thank you.

Peter/DutchChow (moderator)

Your Chow is 6 months old and you indicate he/she has allergies.
Has that been diagnosed by your vet or is that you consider or think?
When there is an allergy (or is it an intolerance?) , for what?
What are the symptoms?
=Skin/coat problems?
=Digesting problems?
Or (only) the watering eyes?

Allergy and intolerance (for certain substances) is a very complicated disorder.

Your vet concluded it is no entropion and suggests to buy an 'an allergy med' at a local store.
To be honest, I think such an advice is a bit strange.

Did he check the eyes to see if the tear ducts are clogged?
This is something also very often happen with dogs (and in particaular with puppies).

Don't start experimenting with whatever stuff people advice. Eyes are very sensitive and once a damage it hardly can be reversed to normal.
Your vet should help you!

Eye problems in Dogs....Don't be fooled

Hi Nicki--,

Thank you for your advice to Zsa Zsa.

As you see I highlighted the sentence about 'salt in some water'.
This is, to my opinion, very dangerous and can be very harmful!
Eyes need to be treated very careful and any irritating (like salt) stuff should be avoided.

See my previous reaction to this thread.

The best is to see the vet and have him prescribed a proper medication. Not one or the other stuff from a store....

Hi Peter & Zsa Zsa,

I do apologise........I got a little mixed up when I was writing my reply to Zsa Zsa.  I have been using boiled water with salt in it to clean Mika down below when she was in season.  I have another tumbler with
boiled water only
in it to clean her eyes.

Hi Zsa Zsa,
Welcome to our forum.  Please dont mess around with eyes.. They can be painful, and the yellow gunk means that there is an infection.. If it were allergies it wouldnt be yellow.
If you care about your dog, please take it to a opthamologist.  Alot of vets dont even look at dogs eyes and instantly refer you to an opthamologist as they just dont have the knowlege for eye disorders.
You said your vet checked for entropian? What about ectropian? What about an eye ulcer? What about a scratch on the eye?
What are you dogs issues that makes you think its allergies? Did the vet say this? Did he give you medicine to treat the allergies?
Is your dog shedding? Does it have fleas? What are you feeding? If it has corn, soy, wheat or beef in it alot of chows are very sensitive to these products.
Ciao,
Sherrie

I wasnt meaning to offend.

This may be a little off-topic, but how many of you have had chows with properly diagnosed allergies? I have lived with chows for over 20 years and have never had a chow with allergies.
I also wonder if all the vaccinations, de-worming, anti-tick treatments are very healthy... Of course I can see that if we don't do all those things our dogs run the risk of catching nasty problems, but maybe we do these things too often and too much?
We do know that allergies in people are a result of us living in a too clean home enviroment. Is this the case with our dogs as well? Are we taking too good care of our dogs?

I do agree with you!! Yellow gunk in the eyes indicates an eye infection or something else that should be taken seriously. If left untreated it can develope into something really serious!

I have to agree with Jessica (Gurkan), when talking about allergies and intolerances.
The diagnoses is very difficult to make and needs some analyses and tests.
In most cases this isn't done for our dogs and it is all a matter of 'indications', but no facts.

Jessaica is observing some good points with respect the environment we have created these days and which seem to attack us in the back...

And for the eyes, and thank you Sherrie and Jessica for the confirmation, be very careful.
Better see a good vet or specialist (as said by Sherrie).

Peter
