Title: A strange new behavior
Post by Ef_Deal on Aug 2nd, 2009 at 9:05pm
We took our vacation in NY at the campsite, and of course the dogs with us.

Moonlight has lately been refusing to eat breakfast.  I keep offering, but she walks away.  I don't want Shadow eating it, since he really needs to lose about 15 pounds, so I have to take it away completely.

On vacation, I set the breakfast in front of her, and she didn't walk away.  Instead, she started pushing dirt and stones around her bowl.  Almost like she was burying it!

Anyone ever see this from your chow?

Well, my Big Boy does not eat breakfast.
However he always gets 2 milkbones when he steps
out first thing in the morning.
In the afternoon, he gets his meal when he comes in
and hangs around the fridge area.

But does he try to bury anything?

No, he is not a digger.
Except to get to some cool earth to lie down.
He will just leave the milkbone he does not eat.

I should note, I feed the dogs twice a day because the vet said feeding Shadow only at night contributed to his overweight.  I used to feed him two cups at night, according to the package directions, but I cut back to feeding him a little over half a cup twice a day.  I put Moonlight on the same schedule to prevent her from getting overweight.

Hi Ef,

I have a question, is Moonlight spayed ?? If not she can be
pseudo pregnant. It can happen about nine weeks after a bitch
was in heat.
Sometimes they stop eating, hiding food, think they even have
pups and produce milk.

Greetings from Ted

Yes, she's spayed.  She stopped eating breakfast about two months ago.  I keep trying to tempt her, but she refuses, and that's fine.  I give her a good dinner, and if I overfill, she doesn't finish it.

I just wondered about the nose-pushing behavior.  Shadow occasionally buries items, never by digging, but by pushing leaves and mulch with his nose.  In his crate, he has buried treats and his toys beneath his blankie.  It just surprise me to see Moonlight trying to cover her bowl like that.

Hi Ef,

Millie used to do the same kind of thing with breakfast.  i finally stopped feeding her breakfast unless she seems hungry (she shows me this by hanging around me alot & showing me all her tricks!)  Millie isn't overweight & i keep a very close eye on her to check she is not getting too thin, but she just seems to be happier to eat in the evenings.  She's doing fine, she just seems to need less food than most dogs i guess?

Hope that helps,

Layla
